Christmas time is such a wonderful season…. right??…. no stress, lots of love and joy, no pressures, and most of all full of peace! Sigh, if only- right? What is wrong with us that we have turned a celebration of Jesus’s birthday and season of goodwill into mayhem!?? But the good news, is that we can change that, and bring the peace of Christmas back into our homes and lives.
A good friend of mine once mentioned that we keep forgetting we are human BEINGS and think we are human DOINGS!! And she is so right (thanks Amy for that nugget). It’s something I think about whenever I resist some down time in order to get something done. I remind myself to just BE. No one can help me just BE, but I can get lots of help getting stuff DONE. I can ask everyone to grab 5 out of place items and put them in the correct place! I can ask my husband to stop at the store for items I have forgotten if he is out doing errands. I can ask the kids to empty the dishwasher etc.
When I can just BE, for even a short period of time, I become more balanced and centered and way more productive!! So, here are a few ideas that can help bring Christmas peace back to you. See if you think any of these will work in your life, and of course, as always, we would love to hear back from you with any suggestions you may have.
1- Take a 15 minute power nap whenever you feel tired. Yes, really. Do it. There is nothing that can’t wait 15 minutes.
2- Take time for yourself every single day. This is not selfish, this is putting your needs first for a period of time, so that you have more (peace, love, joy, patience etc) to give your family and friends. .
3- When buying gifts, think about what you want to gift to say to the recipient. Forget about spending large amounts of money or getting the current “in” gift. When it comes to giving, the thought you put into it, is truly what matters.
4- Stop baking and making gifts for every single person you know!!! The thoughtfulness is beautiful, but if it comes at the cost of patience and harmony in your home, it’s not worth it.
5- Everyday remind yourself that, just for today- do not anger; be kind to people and be filled with gratitude.
6- Smile, relax and enjoy the down time with your family! No homework, no carpools, no agenda! Ahhh, life is good!
Happy Christmas everyone
