Want to look good in a bikini? I do too and I do because of a few changes to my diet. The secret is food. That’s it…food. I am a walking, talking, bikini-wearing example of how much diet impacts our life and our shape. Do you exercise but still eat cheese, fast food, crackers and preservative-laden food? Exercise is NOT enough. Last year I started eating clean, under Mary and Lindsay’s cheerful guidance. I will never go back!
Scared you’ll feel deprived? I understand that fear but my desire to look how I look now vastly overshadowed it. More importantly, I don’t feel deprived – really! I eat clean most of the time, at least 5 days a week. I have a cheat meal – or two on the weekends, enjoy some drinks with my husband or friends and get back on track quickly. This freedom satisfies my desires and does not derail my progress…or my bikini shopping.
You can’t out-exercise a bad diet! I have always exercised, starting as competitive swimmer at age 5. In high school, I would eat two Big Macs from McDonald’s, a large french fry and chocolate shake after swim practice. For all sorts of reasons related to everything from the thermal effect of swimming on calorie burning to youth, my bad diet didn’t matter back then. Now that I’m an adult, diet is everything. In my 30′s, my diet was better, but not “clean.” Lots of us eat a so-so diet and fall victim to the marketing of “healthy foods”. The truth is, if you’re eating crackers, low fat cheese, gluten free processed foods, diet soda and all sorts of other foods marketed as healthy, you will not meet your health and fitness goals.
In the next 6 weeks, Lindsay, Mary and I will share our secrets to being healthier, happier and fitter! The secret for me was eating clean. I now eat whole, organic, nutrient rich food. I do not each processed, “fake” food like crackers, chips and bars. The aisles of Costco and the grocery store are filled with products claiming to be healthy. Flax seed crackers, filled with Omega Acids, must be good for you right? Wrong! There is no nutrition in a dead, processed cracker. Protein and “energy” bars claim to make you healthier. Wrong! They are full of sugar and a bunch of ingredients you can’t read. Instead, eat a hard-boiled egg, fresh celery, almond butter and a piece of organic fruit.
So the bottom line—the key to looking good–is food. It is 90% food and 10% exercise. Really. Since last year, I have not changed my workouts. I changed my diet. I look good in a bathing suit now. I lost 9 pounds and have kept it off. Here is my before and after picture:
So eating clean means this:
Nothing processed (from a box/bag)
Lots of vegetables
Fruit in the morning (I limit fruit to before noon)
½ gallon to 1 gallon of water each day
Whole grains only (oats, quinoa, brown rice). No white bread. No white rice.
Why did I wait until I was 43 though! If only I realized this in my 20′s or 30′s!!! It is never to late to start eating clean. Start today. Stay tuned for more great information on our 6&6 Road Map to Greatness
