The girls and I at 6&6 are all animal lovers. Between us we have 5 dogs, 2 cats and a few fish thrown in! In addition, Lindsay was a canine handler while serving at Oceanside PD. Dogs are a big part of our lives, so I wanted to write about them and about how wonderful it is to have our dogs as part of our families. Our dogs are Abbie, Bear, Seamus, Turbo and Xena! Each is unique and I hope you will get to those them as you read our blogs in the years to come.
I grew up in a house with cats and dogs, so life without pets is unthinkable for me. As a child growing up, I helped feed and clean up after the animals. Learning to take care of a pet as a youngster instilled a sense of responsibility, compassion and caring. I see my my kids learning the same lessons as they take care of the day to day needs of their pets. If you are on the fence about getting a pet, maybe that thought, will help you make your decision.
As an adult I have always had a dog. Before I worked out regularly, I knew having a dog, would keep me moving daily. There is no greater motivator to walk than a whiny dog who is begging to get out and play or walk!!
After having my kids, my daily 2-3 mile walks with our chocolate lab, Rocky, helped me shed those baby pounds very easily and painlessly. Those walks also provided very important stress relief to me. As a new mom, living 6000 miles away from my family, and working full time, my stress levels were high. Making time every day to get outside in the fresh air was a life saver.
Aside from the exercise, dogs are simply the best companions in the world. Always in a good mood, always excited to see you, always excited to eat (your!!) food….and always willingly to protect you or comfort you. The peace of mind of knowing your dog will bark if someone comes to the door, makes a night at home alone, safe and secure.
Next week I will give you some more personal stories of each of our dogs, but for now I want to see if you can match our dogs to their family!!! Please leave your best guesses in the comment section below:)
